Achieve glass skin with makeup: advances in skincare makeup formulations inspired by K-beauty
Traditional makeup formulation focuses on the following aspects—coverage, pigment intensity, long-wear properties, resistance to environmental changes such as humidity.
For the last decade, the rise of K-beauty brought with it a new wave of makeup touted to have skincare benefits—what is also now widely regarded as dermocosmetics. Dermocosmetics are also known as quasi-drugs which essentially blend the use of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals in a single product. These are designed according to the principles of cosmeceutical formulation defined by Albert Kligman—-
- Evidence-based with randomised clinical trials backing its efficacy
- Well-defined mechanism of action and bioactivity within the skin itself
- Ability to cross the skin barrier i.e. penetrate the stratum corneum

How to achieve a dewy finish if you have dry/mature skin
The challenge with dry/aging skin is that foundation tends not to “sit” as well as youthful skin. The reason is due to changes in the skin structure and barrier function—for instance the loss of collagen and elastin means skin is less plump and elastic. Traditional foundation formulations consist of smootheners like silicones (dimethicones) with makeup pigments. These can result in a cakey finish on mature skin types due to the powdery nature of makeup pigments—usually minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. To make sure foundation looks natural, choose a CC cream like the Cell Talk CC cream which incorporates barrier repair actives that nourish dry, mature skin at the same time offering coverage.
Best foundation for oily skin
With this was the creation of the first BB cream. Also known as blemish balms, BB creams were the original dermocosmetics which had pore-reduction and skin mattifying effects—offering an improved makeup experience. For women used to piling on layers of makeup to hide their blemishes—BB creams were a dream to use; the formulation was such that just a single layer would dramatically conceal their imperfections. At the same time, it was a buildable finish, which, unlike traditional foundations, did not leave their skin appearing cakey. BB creams also contained mattifying ingredients like zinc oxide and also botanical actives which had additional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Later, BB creams evolved to become CC creams. These formulations were further infused with natural moisturising factors and humectants such as amino acids, hyaluronic acid and glycerin. The key was to provide a silky feel on skin, not unlike a well-formulated moisturising lotion albeit one that offered coverage.
The K-beauty CC cream trend also influenced the development of foundation formulas by luxury skincare brands like Dior and Chanel—these began to include precious floral extracts which conferred skin brightening benefits.
