Singapore, 9 September 2019 – Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals (www.drtwlderma.com), a pharmaceutical engineering and dermatologist-led cosmeceutical research company, announced the launch of their material science arm, focusing on novel biomaterials for skin applications. This department is headed by accredited dermatologist Dr. Teo Wan Lin, an expert on cosmeceutical skincare/haircare research. She is assisted by Mr Teo Zhi Liang, a chemical engineer with a First Class Honours in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, specialising in Pharmaceutical Engineering, from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
The new biomaterials shop features engineered hair tools designed for those with hair loss and thinning hair. All the hair accessories are coated with the proprietary QRASER™ polymer technology, which allows maximal hold on hair without generation of static, as well as without tension. There is increased elasticity and durability of the hair ties without overstretching, as well as relying on the unique coating alone to hold the ponytail firmly, as opposed to simply via tension. According to accredited dermatologist Dr. Teo and founder of Dr.TWL Biomaterials, “Excessively tight ponytail hairstyles can cause a form of hair loss known as traction alopecia. In addition, people having hair loss already may find their thinning ponytails harder to manage, as they require more rounds of tying in order to secure their hair, and also be affected by the appearance of their ponytail.”

The activewear range of Smart Hair™ Elastics is available in 3 colours: black, brown and clear. The simple elegant aesthetic of the smart hair elastics offers versatility in hair styling, allowing it to be used in braids, high/ low ponytails or more elaborate forms of fashion styling.
The Smart Hair™ Elastics have been tested to be up to 20 times more durable than regular elastics* without causing tension to the scalp while maintaining a high ponytail hairstyle. It is ideal for pain-free styling as the polymer coating is able to stretch and conform to provide support without tension, as opposed to elastics from rubber/latex/plastics. Included in the hair accessories range targeted at women with hair loss QRASER™ SMART PONYTAIL VOLUMIZER Is a ponytail volumizer which uses a inner corrugated surface hidden folding system to “clip” hair in place without tension, effectively creating the illusion of double the actual ponytail thickness.

Dr. Teo says, “Some patients with hair loss, or other scalp conditions such as eczema, dandruff and scalp pimples(known as folliculitis) report scalp pain and sensitivity, which makes it difficult for them to style or tie up their hair.”
The SMART SPIRAL™ HAIR RINGS are engineered from thermoplastic polyurethane, which allow for minimum tension by distributing the pressure of the ponytail tie evenly around the hair rather than pulling on the scalp. The Dr.TWL Original SMART SPIRAL™ HAIR RINGS have coils that are perfectly angled, to allow for beautiful ponytail flow. Additionally, for those who have straight hair, it leaves no mark upon removal, unlike traditional elastics which may leave a kink. The thermoplastic coils stretch with use, in order to conform better to the hair shaft, shape and style to minimise tension for those with sensitive scalps. However, the thermoplastic nature of the coils also means that it is shrinkable, e.g., with a hairdryer for 1 minute. No more over-stretching as opposed to regular elastics.
