Our CUIONS™ Anti-Ageing + Anti-Acne Copper Silk Face Mask has been laboratory tested to kill Staphylococcus Aureus**, a common bacteria that can cause secondary skin infections in acne³ and worsening of facial eczema⁴. Bacterial/Fungal infections can cause mask acne, also known as occlusion acne. The surface is also water/splash resistant with adjustable ear loops.

This copper nanoparticle mask is clinically proven to be more hygienic than the standard fabric mask. It has anti-odor properties by killing bacteria/fungi/microbes that come into contact with the mask⁵. It is particularly suited for comfortable wear against your skin over prolonged periods. Do I need to wear sunscreen under the Copper Silk Face Mask still?

No. The CUIONSTM copper nanoparticle mask is engineered with a skin-friendly coating, which provides the gold standard of UPF 50+ in UV- protective clothing certified by an independent laboratory. This blocks out 98% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Consequently, applying sunscreen over the area under the mask is not necessary. This contrasts with fabric masks as well as the surgical and n95 masks which are not certified for UV protection.

For whom is the Copper Fabric Face Mask suitable for?

How does this mask help if I have pigmentation problems on my cheeks?

We engineer the Copper Silk Mask with the highest level of UPF 50+ protection, which prevents sun-damage that can cause and worsen pigmentation such as melasma and age spots (solar lentigines). Safe and effective levels of copper ions release on facial contact which is beneficial for the skin’s natural processes to remove pigmentation cells.

How does this mask work for anti-acne and anti-ageing?

Copper is an essential nutrient required by human physiology, participating in the synthesis and stabilisation of skin proteins (1) such as collagen. It also has excellent microbial properties, having been used as a biocide for centuries and effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses (1). Since bacterial growth significantly contributes to acne and mask acne, the CUIONSTM copper fabric provides an anti-bacterial effect that consequently helps to impede the development of acne.

A landmark study (2) done in 2012 by a group of Korean dermatologists demonstrated that there is statistically significant reduction in wrinkles and improvement in skin elasticity with a copper nanoparticle fabric. Data from 2 randomized controlled trials (2,3) demonstrated improvement of facial skin characteristics using copper containing pillowcases – references are appended as below. These trials showed statistically significant reduction in wrinkles within 2 weeks of use. Accordingly, Dr.TWL’s CUIONSTM technology incorporates a laboratory tested safe and effective level for consistent release of copper ions for overall skin healing, well-being, and reduction of wrinkles.

Furthermore, the CUIONSTM copper silk is UPF 50+ certified, which performs the role of UV- protection for prevention of photoageing. UPF 50+ qualifies for excellent protection according to the Skin Cancer Foundation (4) Seal of Recommendation guidelines. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate. Is this mask breathable?

Yes. This is a specially engineered fabric which allows skin comfort, maximum sweat wicking.

Is this mask suitable for sports? Is it waterproof?

Kindly note the current WHO guidelines do not recommend usage of any type of facial masks while exercising as this will reduce one’s oxygen levels which may be fatal. However, the CUIONSTM mask is ideal for before and after sports periods, as it is waterproof and sweat proof. Conveniently slip the mask under the jaw during exercise and raise it back up with minimal contact right after your activity.

Will my makeup and lipstick stick to the mask?

We design the mask with a special non-stick skin-friendly coating which minimises transfer of makeup. However, we recommend using no-transfer lipsticks, blushes and CC creams such as in our skincare makeup range, for optimal effects.

How many washes can the mask undergo?

Can the mask be hung out to dry in the sun?

Yes certainly. The CUIONS copper silk is quick dry, so there is no need to specially hang it out in the sun to dry for a long time. In fact, it also dries well indoors, with anti-bacterial properties on the fabric to minimise odour.

May I have the measurements of the mask?

The mask measures approximately 24cm by 12.5cm.

Will the mask cause a reaction with topical acne creams like retinol A or differin?

In general, we do not recommend using retinoids or differin during the daytime. This is because these are sun-sensitising actives, and should only be applied at night. For pimple creams that can be used under face masks, we recommend creams that contain anti-inflammatory botanical ingredients, such as the anti-acne Blemish Spot Cream, rather than those with synthetic actives like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These synthetic actives, under the occlusive effect of any face mask, will cause increase in skin irritation. In addition, benzoyl peroxide will bleach the color of any face mask worn over it.

Does the mask have antiviral properties?

The nanoparticle impregnated fabric has been demonstrated in studies to have antiviral properties, which means it inactivates the virus quicker on the mask compared to other materials. This means it can reduce fomite transmission i.e. transmission of infection via contaminated surfaces.

Does the mask protect me from COVID-19?

For COVID-19 protection, the mask has the equivalent filtration of a surgical mask. In a country like Singapore where masks are mandated as a public health measure, this means that there will be less virus in the environment which reduces the risk of infection. However, for highly infectious variants such as Delta and Omicron, which transmit via airborne modes, surgical masks/equivalent will not work to protect one from infection.

FFP2 or N95 masks should be worn over the mask in this way, should you wish to protect your skin if you are acne prone.
