Hi Samantha,
Retinol is widely used in over the counter cosmetic skincare to treat skin ageing by increasing the production of collagen and blocking collagen degradation. Dermatologists tend not to use it because there is a much more effective version known as retinoids ( but is prescription only and contraindicated in pregnancy).
The use of retinol in over the counter skincare causes skin irritation over the medium to long term, when used without medical supervision, leading to side effects such as burning sensations, flaking and eczema (dermatitis) and is generally regarded as a weak anti-aging molecule.
It is definitely not recommended for those with skin sensitivities such as rosacea and eczema, who will likely experience skin irritations with retinol usage.
The philosophy behind Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals’ dermatologist-backed skincare is to replace the use of retinol with a much more active ingredient known as oligopeptides in its cosmeceutical skincare products.
Oligopeptides have been proved to regulate certain biological processes in our skin, the top 2 layers of skin the epidermis and dermis. They help skin exfoliation by reducing the excessive production of proteins that are involved in holding skin cells together, on top of resetting the skin DNA in the ageing process. They weaken cell connections and helps in getting rid of dead skin.
Also, they contain enzyme functions that lighten and reduce dark spots on your skin to brighten your skin, giving you a radiant glow. The Oligopeptide molecule is a key ingredient incorporated in the Radiance Fluide Hydrating Emulsion and Elixir-Vâ„¢ Total Recovery Serum.
