As someone with dry skin, despite using copious amount of skincare before makeup application, I find that my foundation tends to start “flaking” after half a day, especially at the forehead area. What steps can I take to prevent that from happening?
Hi Rayna,
Here are some tips for relieving dry skin, which helps prevent the skin from flaking after applying makeup:
- Take short baths and showers using tepid water. Long, hot showers may worsen your dry skin.
- Apply a dermatologist approved ceramide-based moisturiser after getting out of the bath or shower, while your skin is still slightly damp.
Ceramides are best understood as the cement joining bricks of a wall together. Genetically, people with sensitive/eczema skin types have deficient ceramide content. Additionally, one’s skin barrier can be damaged by the use of harsh cleansers containing laureth sulfates, overwashing or just due to ageing and hormonal influences such as menopause. The use of ceramides in moisturisers is crucial in preventing and repairing skin barrier dysfunction.
- Read ingredients on skin care products. Soaps, alcohol-based toners, and products that contain fragrance can irritate dry, sensitive skin.
- Do not overwash your face, especially if you use strong cleansers.
- Use a facial mist, before and after make up.
In my practice, I formulated the Mineral Booster™ which is power-packed with amino acids, acting as a mineral booster that soothes, invigorates and revitalises your skin. It can be easily incorporated into your skincare routine – use it before or after makeup for a dewy finish and maintain hydration of your skin, keeping dry skin at bay.
Your skin should start to feel better quickly. If these changes do not bring relief, you may want to see a dermatologist. Very dry skin can require a prescription ointment or cream. Dry skin also can be a sign of a medical condition, such as eczema, that needs treatment. A dermatologist can examine your skin and explain what can help reduce your discomfort.
